Barca’s Messi receives record sixth European Golden Shoe

first_imgBARCELONA, (Reuters) – Barcelona forward Lionel Messi picked up a record-extending sixth – and third consecutive – European Golden Shoe award yesterday following his outstanding individual 2018-19 domestic campaign. The award is presented to the top goalscorer in league football across Europe, with the Argentine finding the net 36 times last season as Barca retained their La Liga title.Messi was three ahead of nearest rival Kylian Mbappe, who scored 33 times for Paris St Germain as they won France’s Ligue 1.“My team and my team mates, I would have never been able to win even one of these awards without them,” Messi said at the presentation in Barcelona. “This is a recognition for everyone, all the team.” The forward, who won his first Golden Shoe in 2010, admitted he was disappointed to have missed out on Champions League glory again after Barcelona blew a 3-0 first leg lead to Liverpool at the semi-final stage. However, he said he was conscious that the league should be the club’s priority.“The Champions League is something special and we all want to win it, but we are conscious that the Liga is the most important.“La Liga can help you reach the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. It is very difficult if you don’t perform well in the Liga to compete in the Champions League. “We never forget about the Liga and the Copa because we are Barcelona and we always aim to win everything.”Barca have endured a difficult start to the season, losing twice in their first eight league games. They have won their last three matches to pull themselves into second place on 16 points, two behind leaders Real Madrid.last_img read more

Coronavirus affecting chess development

first_imgPresident of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Frankie Farley said yesterday that like all the other sports disciplines, the Coronavirus pandemic has affected immensely, his federation’s plans for 2020. Since being elected GCF president last , Farley has presided over an executive which has been responsible for increasing the number of tournaments locally. In fact, before the advent of the Coronavirus, chess tournaments were regular features for both junior and senior players as the GCF tried to gets its players prepared for upcoming activities which included the ninth annual CARIFTA chess tournament and the Chess Olympiad in July which has both been affected. The Guyana Chess Federation attracted a huge turnout at schools chess tournaments at School of the Nations and Mae’s prior to the advent of the Coronavirus pandemic. The federation seemed well on its way to achieving its vision which is to: enhance the lives of all Guyanese by increasing the play of chess, where the appreciation of the value of time, concentration, evaluation, patience and calculated risk taking are paramount to success in life as in chess. As if to help it achieve its objectives, FIDE, the world governing body for chess, awarded the GCF, the rights to stage the ninth CARIFTA Junior Chess Championships. That championships, for players aged 12-20, on January 1 this year, was critical to the GCF’s developmental plans as the local body had earmarked some 100 players for exposure. That exposure could possibly have resulted in a tremendous fillip for the game locally. However, the Coronavirus subsequently forced the tournament, which was due to start next week, to be postponed.“The Guyana Chess Federation regrets to announce that with the propagation of cases of COVID-19 throughout the region, we have had no choice but to postpone the CARIFTA Junior Chess Tournament,’ a release from the federation stated.“We will be monitoring the pandemic with the hope of soon seeing a downward trend in the infection curve,” the release added. Yesterday, Farley told this newspaper that so far, the tournament is “totally out!”According to the GCF president, the vulnerability of the young children, who were down to participate in the tournament, was taken into account. He, however, disclosed that there was a possibility that Guyana could stage the tournament next year. “We’ve negotiated for the rights to hold it next year,” he said adding that the postponement was in essence. ..”giving us some breathing space.”Farley, though, was optimistic that should conditions get better, the tournament could be held in August.Meanwhile, Farley, who recently attended a FIDE Congress in Dubai along with Yolander Persaud, who is a member of FIDE’s Ethics Committee, said that the trip was somewhat successful.“Concerning my trip to the Congress, I made some connections and one of the new ideas we came up with was to stage a tournament among Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Barbados upon the completion of the CARIFTA chess competition but that too has been shelved because of the coronavirus pandemic,” he told this newspaper. The decentralizing of the sport by the GCF, has also been affected.According to Farley there is only one sub association, the Berbice Chess Federation, and there were plans to decentralize the game further.Farley said his executive plans to roll out a new constitution, (which is yet to be ratified) which reflects the 10 administrative regions, and plans were to have a sub association in each of the other regions, with meetings to be held biannually. Additionally he said chess was to be integrated into an existing Police Youth Group and also the Prison Service. Concerning chess in schools, Farley said that he had hoped that a government would have been in place by this time to allow his executives to sit down with the Ministry of Education to develop a model for use in the schools’ curriculum. His association has already held tournaments at schools such as Mae’s and School of the Nations, to huge turnouts. Farley said that he is eager for the situation to improve so that his executives can return to the business of putting chess in Guyana back on the world’s map.last_img read more

Batting will be Windies’ biggest challenge

first_imgMiddle order batsman, Nkrumah Bonner, believes that batting will be in the limelight and will be West Indies’ biggest challenge if they are to come out successful in the upcoming test series against England. Bonner was at the time responding to a question posed by Stabroek Sport at the West Indies team’s virtual press conference yesterday. He stated, “Well, over the past year the batting has been struggling, the bowling has been holding up its end of it, I think with the batting if we can score the runs and put it on the board that would give us the best chance of coming out successful on this tour.”At 31-years-old, Bonner is poised to make his Test debut in the three-Test series which is set to bowl off next Wednesday. However, with two T20 Internationals (including one against England in England back in 2011) Bonner reckons that the conditions have not changed that much since then. As such he recommends that the key to batting in English conditions would be to play the ball as late as possible.“You just have to play the ball late, you have to be patient and try to rotate the strike as much as possible,” he declared.Despite his limited international experience, Bonner said that his time in the first-class arena in the Caribbean has helped fortify his ability as a capable batsman. “I’ve gotten a lot of experience in the first-class seasons as well over the years and I’m hoping to use that experience moving forward…It would have benefited me a lot, first-class cricket in the Caribbean is very difficult and it posed a lot of challenges so I’m hoping to carry that over to Test cricket,” the Jamaican said.As a batsman, Bonner also indicated that he has not set himself any target but rather to fulfill his primary role.“My primary job is to make runs. I’m not a goal setter. I have a general plan but I go out there and value my innings and do my best every single day,” Bonner noted while adding “the mental strength, I’ll need that up here and also the discipline and the calmness at the crease and also the ability to soak up pressure and know your time will come in the game.” Bonner, who also proved himself to be a capable leg-spinner, said  that the spinners will not have a huge role in the conditions. He stated, “In England it is not spinner friendly, mostly seam, if the spinners do play they are in a more in a containing role especially in the first innings and in the last innings they can work wonders.”last_img read more

Shergul Arshad – Mondogoal – DFS Destiny

first_img IGT sanctions capped $300m senior debt note sale June 9, 2020 StumbleUpon Share Share Related Articles Submit Swedish CEOs challenge ‘unrealistic demands’ against threat of igaming becoming obsolete June 8, 2020 All-in Global: ‘Fantastyc’ markets around the world July 16, 2020 Mondogoal is one of the largest DFS operators in the world and has partnerships with some of the football greatest clubs from Real Madrid, to Barcelona, Chelsea and Roma. Shergul Arshad, MondogoalIt recently established deals with SISAL and Lottomatica in Italy, and so the discussion about how DFS operators and bookmakers can complement rather than challenge one another has come to the fore.We spoke to CEO Shergul Arshad about this and all Mondogoal has going on and coming up ahead of the new domestic season.Shergul Arshad will be speaking on the topic of ‘How DFS operators can work with bookmakers’ at the two day Betting on Sports Conference (#BIGnBOS) in London this September 15th to 16th at the Grange Tower Bridge.SBC: Thanks for catching up Shergul. So it’s been all systems go at Mondogoal these past few months, can you take us through an overview of what’s been going on?Shergul: We’ve been rather busy. Everything has its timing as far as industry cycles go, and the next six months will be the time for daily fantasy sports and sports betting sites teaming up. We’re leading the way with the deals with SISAL and Lottomatica in Italy, and both of these have seen good responses to their initial competitions based on Euro 2016.The close season ended well; we launched the Mondogoal app, we held numerous big money competitions and there was our Football Manager 2017 competition too thanks to our partnership with Sports Interactive. Now is the only quiet month in the entirety of the year of course, so we’re gearing up for the new season and will have some more announcements in the near future!SBC: The deal with SISAL and Lottomatica was something of a landmark. Can you tell us more about how this came about and how much potential, and in what ways, can DFS operators and bookmakers work side by side to help one another?Shergul: There was a lot of validation which stemmed from our club deals and media deals such as the one with Yahoo. Establishing deals with sports betting operators has been on the agenda at Mondogoal for some time however, and last summer we were in the advanced stages of negotiations of one of the largest UK bookmakers. Then the turmoil with the legality of DFS in the States kicked in and due to this and some other factors bookies took a step back to ‘wait and see’. We had a deal in Italy with Intralot previously, but Mondogoal was the brand so it was the opposite construct of what we have in place with SISAL and Lottomatica now. This year’s ICE in London is where the dialogue with SISAL and Lottomatica began. We’ve had a marketing relationship with Ikepono, who themselves have business relationships throughout Italy. This was the introduction point, and it emerged that both SISAL and Lottomatica both wanted to run the same fantasy product under a different brand. This was our first foray into a white label DFS product. They’d been considering other operators but Mondogoal won the contract.   SISAL and Lottomatica now operate two DFS products, SISAL’s is FantaMister and Lottomatica’s is MasterGoal, under different branding but the Mondogoal product is what’s underneath both. They went live at the beginning of the European Championships, and this was successful but we’re looking ahead to the new domestic seasons to get it alive and kicking. We’re now looking to do more of these deals throughout Europe. If you’re a sports betting operator you’re always faced with the build, buy or partner decision and right now it seemingly makes sense to partner.SBC: Is the future of DFS all about personalisation for the individual player? The increasing number of white label club versions from Real Madrid to Villa seems to suggest so?Shergul: We now have nine club partnerships in place. I think there are two ways that DFS emerges. First there’s the major players of Yahoo, FanDuel and DraftKings and for these massive amounts of capital is required. The best way to become a billion dollar company after all is to start with $100m.So one strategy is to keep raising large amounts of money, but the US case study is a great example of the dangers of this. The marketing teams at these operators spent ludicrous sums on television advertising, and many of these ads went out in states which have now banned real money DFS. So these were costly, high risk marketing strategies which is not something we wish to engage in.We’ve gone down the route of focusing on club partnerships as this means strong brand associations, and a high level of credibility too. They don’t necessarily drive high volume however, as a link to Mondogoal on the official club site may not target the typical potential DFS player. These types are generally likelier to go to alternative sources such as an unofficial fan blog for their news, transfer gossip and to keep up to date with what the latest is with Chelsea, Real Madrid or whoever. The sports betting sites meanwhile, these drive volume. The reason is they’ve done the hard part. They’ve spent money to acquire an established, regulated pool of customers who have registered their details, are interested in sports and wagering and are perhaps looking for something new. A skill game such as the Mondogoal product where they have better odds of winning can fit in perfectly. This is why we’re adamant that working side by side with sports betting operators is the best possible model for continued expansion. We’re leading the way when it comes to this, Italy is the current testing ground but we have discussions ongoing to launch in the UK market. We can launch quickly, we’re proven and I’ll be open to discussions at BOS 2016 with any interested parties.SBC: Will there be any more media deals in the vein of the partnership with Sports Interactive?Shergul: Sports Interactive is similar to our other club and media deals. Football Manager is one of the most well regarded sports gaming franchises in the world, and the players are typically stats and research obsessed; this is fitting for a successful daily fantasy player. The winner of our Be In Football Manager 2017 Summer Showdown competition was Ed Brown. He picked the impressive line up of Rui Patricio, Hector, Soares, Sagna, Pogba, Matuidi, Sanches, King, Griezmann, Nani and Muller. We’re actually looking to kick off two major media deals ahead of the new domestic season in August. These will be revenue share deals and I’ll be able to tell you more about them soon.SBC: Are you looking forward to Betting on Sports and what’ll you be discussing there?Shergul: I’m very excited for BOS. I participated in a workshop after ICE with a series of operators and DFS was a buzzword starting to be thrown around. Whilst the larger US sites focused on the US and their own marketing, we’ve emerged as the only robust, scalable, secure and proven platform that integrates into gaming sites and I’m really looking forward to demonstrating the platform and discussing new partnerships. Our initial focus may be football, but we are open to new fantasy sports being run off our platform as well. Anyone who is interested in meeting up at BOS can ping me on Twitter, I’m @shergul. Thanks and see you in September!Tickets are available now for BOS 2016last_img read more

T. Smith, Pierce exit Sunday’s game with concussions

first_imgBALTIMORE — As if the sting of a third straight loss wasn’t enough, the Ravens’ list of injuries grew even longer on Sunday as wide receiver Torrey Smith and running back Bernard Pierce both left the game with concussions.Pierce sustained his concussion in the second quarter while Smith was injured attempting to make a long reception early in the third quarter. Neither player returned to the game.“We’ll have to check those out later this week,” coach John Harbaugh said after the game.Smith made just one reception for 14 yards against the Broncos while Pierce carried the ball five times for 20 yards in the 34-17 loss at M&T Bank Stadium.Wide receiver Tandon Doss suffered a twisted ankle and linebacker Albert McClellan was dealing with a hamstring issue but returned to the game. Neither player appeared to be in bad shape in the locker room following the game.Linebacker Terrell Suggs return to action two weeks after suffering a torn right biceps, but his impact was minimal as he was forced to leave at a few different points in dealing with pain in the arm. The five-time Pro Bowl linebacker finished with only one tackle as he played 42 of the Ravens’ 77 defensive snaps. The 2011 Defensive Player of the Year declined to talk to reporters following the Ravens’ third consecutive loss.last_img read more

Caps John Carlson Makes a Strong Team USA Olympic Hockey Team

first_imgFollowing today’s NHL Winter Classic in the “Big House” in Ann Arbor, USA Hockey announced their 25 man roster for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi in February and as predicted in this blog back in November, the Washington Capitals John Carlson made the team on defense.Carlson, in a conference call with the media tonight, called it a “dream come true” and said that playing on this big stage would be an even greater feat than scoring the overtime game winning goal for USA in the 2010 World Juniors Gold Medal.Washington’s #74 received a ringing endorsement from team captain Alex Ovechkin when the Gr8 said that Carlson was the team’s best defensemen and 100% deserved to be on the team. Carlson has had an outstanding season and when Mike Green was injured earlier in the year, he stepped up as the team’s #1 d-man on the power play to go along with his role of being on the #1 pairing for killing penalties. Simply put, his ability to play in all situations combined with his excellent skating and hard shot made him a perfect fit for this year’s Team USA Olympic squad. As for the rest of the team, GM David Poile’s club that will be coached by Penguins bench boss Dan Bylsma is as follows:Goalies (3):Ryan Miller (Buffalo), Jonathan Quick (Los Angeles),and Jimmy Howard (Detroit)Defensemen (8):Carlson, Ryan Suter (Minnesota), Ryan McDonagh (Rangers), Brooks Orpik (Pittsburgh), Paul Martin (Pittsburgh), Kevin Shattenkirk (St. Louis), Kevin Faulk (Carolina), and Cam Fowler (Anaheim)Forwards (14):Patrick Kane (Chicago), Zach Parise (Minnesota), Joe Pavelski (San Jose), Ryan Callahan (Rangers), Derek Stepan (Rangers), James van Riemsdyk (Toronto), Phil Kessel (Toronto), Blake Wheeler (Winnipeg), David Backes (St. Louis), T.J. Oshie (St. Louis), Ryan Kesler (Vancouver), Max Pacioretty (Montreal), Paul Stastny (Colorado), and Dustin Brown (Los Angeles)This is a very good team but the challenge, as Poile mentioned back in August, is to be able to handle the big ice surface in Sochi. Team USA has not fared well outside of North America in the Olympics so the pressure is on this club to produce. The strength of this squad, in my opinion, is the goaltending and up front. Miller, despite playing behind a weak Sabres club, has been performing at a very high level and if Quick doesn’t get healthy and play well quickly, it will be the Michigan State alum in net once again for the Americans. Up front, Kane is as good a scorer as any in the world. The defense is the question mark but this crew of eight is filled with players who can play at both ends of the rink. The time zone change, Sochi is nine hours ahead of the east coast, will be a factor for many of the NHL players but that impacts nearly every squad. On paper, Canada and Sweden look to be the best while Russia is hoping home ice helps their cause. I see Russia’s defense and goaltending as ultimately being their downfall. There are still six weeks to go until the games start, but my prediction right now is:Gold – SwedenSilver – CanadaBronze – USAlast_img read more

Jimenez going to disabled list with freak ankle injury

first_imgBALTIMORE — A freak ankle injury has brought the first half of Ubaldo Jimenez’s first season in Baltimore to an end with the Orioles placing the starting pitcher on the 15-day disabled list.Manager Buck Showalter announced Friday that the 30-year-old rolled his right ankle stepping in a hole in a parking lot two days ago, forcing the Orioles to send Jimenez to the DL and recall right-hander Kevin Gausman to start against the New York Yankees on either Saturday or Sunday. Chris Tillman is likely to pitch on Saturday after initially being scheduled to start on Sunday night with Gausman taking the hill for the final game prior to the All-Star break.“It’s pretty puffy [and] taped up,” Showalter said. “He tried to take a workday [on Thursday]. We were hoping it would resolve somewhat today. It did not. It’s real sore today”Jimenez injured the same ankle while pitching in 2012 and is eligible to return on the sixth day after the All-Star break, according to Showalter. Because the Orioles will be recalling Gausman to take Jimenez’s place, the Orioles can only backdate Jimenez’s time on the DL to the day after Gausman was optioned on Monday, meaning he is eligible to return on July 23.The news ends a difficult first half of the 2014 season for the right-hander as he has a 3-8 record with a 4.52 ERA and leads the majors with 60 walks in his 99 2/3 innings over 18 starts. Jimenez signed a four-year, $50 million contract in the offseason, but the veteran hasn’t lived up to the high expectations that accompanied the long-term investment.“It is what it is. I understand how things work with people that make a living making light of things like this,” said Showalter about the nature of the ankle injury. “He’s pretty frustrated by it, but we’d rather have him healthy and pitching. If it wasn’t for the All-Star break, we might wait a couple days [to see if he’d heal quickly].”last_img read more

Sports world amused by President Obama’s “Flacco” goof

first_imgThe debate continues over where Joe Flacco ranks in the NFL quarterbacking hierarchy, but the Ravens signal-caller was apparently on the mind of the most powerful man in the world on Friday.Addressing the hack of Sony and the cancelled release of “The Interview” on Friday afternoon, President Barack Obama intended to mention the stars of the movie — Seth Rogen and James Franco — but instead uttered the name “James Flacco” to set off a social media frenzy of laughter. The slip of the tongue prompted a swift response from the seventh-year quarterback’s official Twitter account:.@barackobama It’s James Franco, not James Flacco 😉— Joe Flacco (@TeamFlacco) December 19, 2014 Never change, Internet. But the most important question has yet to be answered. Is James Flacco elite? Of course, this meant the rest of the Twitter world needed a piece of the action and didn’t disappoint as a “James Flacco” account quickly offered this gem:I’d be more bummed about Sony yanking my movie, but I’m having the best season of my career.— James Flacco (@JamesFlacco) December 19, 2014last_img read more

J. Smith, Jernigan absent from Thursday’s Ravens practice

first_imgOWINGS MILLS, Md. — Moving closer to their big Week 11 encounter with the Dallas Cowboys, the Ravens were without seven players during Thursday’s practice session.Headlining the list was No. 1 cornerback Jimmy Smith, who missed his second straight workout with a back issue. Head coach John Harbaugh downplayed the ailment on Wednesday and expressed confidence that Smith would be able to play on Sunday.Harbaugh also said that he expected Smith to practice this week, making his status for Friday’s workout worth monitoring. Assuming he is able to play, the sixth-year defensive back will likely be trusted to match up with two-time Pro Bowl receiver Dez Bryant.Defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan (shoulder) was a new absences on Thursday after not being listed on the injury report a day earlier.Running back Lorenzo Taliaferro (thigh), tight end Crockett Gillmore (thigh), and left guard Alex Lewis (ankle) were also missing from Thursday’s practice. Taliaferro was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday, making it likely that he suffered the injury during practice. The Ravens also gave linebacker Terrell Suggs and center Jeremy Zuttah the day off. Zuttah played through a mild ankle sprain in last week’s win over Cleveland while it’s no secret that Suggs is playing with a torn left biceps. For the second straight day, right guard Marshal Yanda (shoulder) and linebacker Elvis Dumervil (foot) were present and working as full participants. Dumervil wouldn’t confirm Thursday whether he would play against Dallas, but he believes he’s “really close” to being his old self from a physical standpoint after being shut down just over five weeks ago.“Just the strength [is better],” said Dumervil, who has appeared in only two games this year after undergoing offseason foot surgery. “I think last time, as a competitor, as a winner, you just want to go out [and play]. Sometimes it is good to listen, and I learned that.”Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith (back/hip) returned to practice on a limited basis after sitting out on Wednesday.Below is Thursday’s full injury report:BALTIMOREDID NOT PARTICIPATE: TE Crockett Gillmore (thigh), DT Timmy Jernigan (shoulder), G Alex Lewis (ankle), LB Terrell Suggs (non-injury), CB Jimmy Smith (back), RB Lorenzo Taliaferro (thigh), C Jeremy Zuttah (non-injury)FULL PARTICIPATION: LB Kamalei Correa (thigh), LB Elvis Dumervil (foot), LB C.J.
